Teams

Every Newport rocket is designed, built and flown by a crew of 3 to 10 students. Crews compete in the American Rocketry Challenge, the world's largest student rocket contest.

Six teams, one club. Every team helps new members learn, shares its ethos and carries the club’s knowledge forward.

ARC 2026–27 · Qualification

Carry two raw eggs to exactly 800 feet, then land safely with both eggs uncracked after 37–40 seconds.

  • 800 ft target
  • 37–40 s flight
  • 2 intact eggs

Lower scores are better

How scoring works

Flight score = altitude penalty + time penalty

Altitude
1 point per foot above or below 800 feet.
Time
4 points per second below 37 or above 40 seconds. A flight lasting 37–40 seconds earns zero time points.

For example, 810 feet and 41 seconds gives 10 altitude points + 4 time points = 14 points.

Qualifying for Nationals

  1. Fly up to three times

Complete at least two qualification flights with a NAR observer. A third attempt is optional.

  2. Add your best two scores

Add the scores from your two best valid flights. Lower combined scores rank higher.

  3. Earn a place at Nationals

The top 100 eligible teams nationwide advance, with no more than the two best qualifying teams from Newport High School.

The club briefing gives about 25 as a rough guide to the combined qualifying score. The actual cutoff changes each year.
